Mei lives without the ability to feel emotional pain for herself and others. It's as Her mind went into exhaust and is unable to process "emotion." After a near-death experience that caused him to lose nearly every function in his brain, Ren's mind is programmed with advanced coding, that has given him the ability to learn what emotional feeling is and feel it himself. Code with feelings eventually encounters life without feelings.
