As implied by the panel depicting the crusade, there are races of animal-people in this world. They mainly live in a region called Megra, which was once a very powerful collection of kingdoms, but has fallen into chaos in recent years. Megra is a common target for the Orthian Knights, who wish to invade, settle, and 'civilise' the wild animal-people.
