An alien civilization destroys most of humanity then impregnates Tobias and leaves Sonja to protect him. Tobias and Sonja at first hate each other but develop a romantic relationship while surviving in the harsh new world. As Tobias' body and sexuality begins to change, even Sonja evolves as a protector. The reversal of their role means they need a safe place to develop while they journey to a destination unknown.
