Where I come from, before the time of electronic databases when parents could monitor their kid's progress easily, getting a mandatory parent's signature on your tests was the only way to officiate that your folks were aware of how you were doing. And just like the tests themselves, getting said signature could be an ordeal onto itself as punishment bounced from teacher to parent and back again.
