The problem with governments and societies trying to argue that education isn't a race is that they don't even believe it themselves. Fact is, we're all addicted to looking at and betting on children like horses, pouring resources and raising stakes to see who comes out on top. We lionise the winners, treat the bottom half like disposable refuse, and use that prospect to threaten the rest.
