Farquar struggles with being the only anthropomorphic being in a world dominated by humans. The world he lives in is separated by the upper class and lower class, the rich elite living behind their walls in the upper city and the rest of the population, including those deemed "unacceptable" by the ruling class living in squalor in the lower city. Farquar discovers early on he's been given a rare but bloody "gift" for violence and uses it to his full advantage.
