In a parallel universe Japan, hard times have engulfed the entire country—hunger, poverty, war. A mother, unable to feed her son, leaves him at a foster home, hoping he will have a better chance at survival. The orphanage workers treat him far better than the other children, which leads to him being bullied. As a result, he grows up weak and unathletic, trapped in a miserable life—until one day, he meets a very important person who changes his fate entirely.
