They are the fun, quirky side characters that only matter when the hero needs them, otherwise, they are cut from the story. The three of them prefer it this way. Lilith and Adrian are mages and childhood friends, hiding their magic from a world that would abuse it for glory. Matthew is a scholar trying to escape a squire's fate to die for his hero. They have their own lives to live and they want no part in being the tools of someone else's plot.
