Twelve year old Keiko Fahren feels bitter and helpless when her beloved brother, Nari, leaves to fight on the front lines of a distant, forever-war. Her resentment is further compounded when her family sends her far from home to live with her expat aunt and uncle in the culturally dissimilar nation of Tyala. Lured into employment by the scheming proprietress of a decaying, mob-run restaurant on her first day ashore, young Keiko quickly finds herself in over her head. To make matters worse, the restaurant’s mischievous guardian, a demon named Rumiji, thinks Keiko would make a perfect new friend.
