On the day of his friends birthday, Yozora logs into his first Virtual Reality Massively Multilayer Online Role-playing Game (VRMMORPG). With the NerveBrace, a bracelet that stimulates the user's five senses via their brain, players can experience and control their in-game characters with their minds. After entering an event quest and clashing with an unknown Boss, they discover that they are unable to log out. This unknown Boss appears and tells the players that they must find and defeat it if they wish to be free. Those who suffer in-game deaths or have their NerveBrace removed will have their accounts locked and suffer and endless Coma till it is defeated.
