An uproar has overwhelmed the North side of Alastair's home town, Clockwork. It is a dangerous Rebellion of people that possess the Forbidden Ways. When born, each person of Clockwork gets a Way, or occupation, for life; Forbidden Ways are pursued by only the worst people. Alastair, with his best friend and crush, Marrow, must help save Clockwork from the attackers while Alastair struggles to keep his worst secret of all.
