A lot of Nathaniel's gender identity is based on my own experience. Nathaniel introduces themself with their birthname, Nathalia, here as that's the name they went by in their younger years. Later on, they don't consider it a deadname, but have a preference for being known as 'Nathaniel'. Similar to myself (I'm ok with using my birthname). You'll see more of it in a later chapter.
