From the excellent Tolkien Gateway: " Oromë chose Alatar to send to Middle-earth (to contest the will of Sauron), and Alatar decided to bring along Pallando as his friend." Alatar was later named "Morinehtar" which means "Darkness Slayer," and Pallando was named "Rómestámo," which means "East Helper." I love that Mori chose Róm to be with him as his friend. I will explore that.
