Sponsors are sources of power who search for hosts to use them. Some people are born with a connection to their sponsors, whereas others stumble upon them due to the red string of fate which supposedly connects you to your destined power. There's a myth that says you're connected to one sponsor and one sponsor only during your entire lifetime.
