Gearoid Molloy

Wellies are named after the first Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley. They were originally made of leather and of a particular style, but 'Wellington boots' quickly came to mean any calf-high boot with a short heel. The rubber version we all know came about in 1853 when Hiram Hutchinson licensed the then-new vulcanised rubber patent off of Charles Goodyear (of Goodyear tyres fame)
