"Try your best" is possibly one of the most passive-aggressive forms of encouragement. Since it doesn't sound as harsh, you'd think it'd be more forgiving - but the truth is, it's the same benign veneer that gives the encourager prerogative to act even nastier if you fail to meet implied expectations. Why do people call it "your" best if you're never the person to decide what "best" is?
