There's always been a grown-up trend to think of children as needy, whiny, annoying, etc. Not just the naughtier ones; I've noticed in conversations with adults that there's an open willingness to treat all kids as pests. I get that kids can be obnoxious, but if obnoxious behaviour is the issue, I'd argue that adults are capable of far worse things, yet don't get the same level of vitriol.
