I get that obsessing over what people are doing isn't the most positive or constructive use of your time, but swinging to the other extreme of being happily oblivious isn't necessarily a good idea either. Office politics jumps out to me as one significant example where just doing your job and ignoring people doesn't suddenly mean others will do the same; it just makes you look like a pushover.
