Effort shares a very strange relationship with postmodernist society. Employers and figures of authority want to see more of it, but they're not so willing to reward it, because anyone can put in effort without being competent, relevant, or sincere. But woe betide those who try to skip out on effort. This is why corporate culture dictates that underlings do not leave the office before the boss.
