Surplus value is the value created by the labour of the common wage labourer. It is the difference between what it costs to manufacture a product (including materials, plant, and labour power) and what it's sold for - the unpaid excess, freely appropriated by the capitalist. Justified by the capitalist's ownership of the means of production and controlled by him exclusively.
