When asking for help finding HISTORICAL refs for protective hairstyles in a certain large webcomic server a mod came up to me and said it would be more "accurate" to straighten their hair. While I am aware many POC straightened their hair due to racism, hair relaxers weren't invented until 1909 and many people didn't have the time, money, or desire to do so.
