The sterilization of surgical equipment was made popular by British surgeon Joseph Lister in the 1850-60s. Before then, handwashing and washing tools wasn't really regarded with importance. Dying of a simple infection was far more common than you'd think. Even antibiotics weren't widely available or mass produced until the discovery of penicillin in 1928 (this story is in 1917 😬).
