The scene towards the end was inspired by the jobs my roommates took in college. When we were all looking for jobs they didn't find anything interesting and ended up doing pretty mediocre things. On the other hand, being a writer isn't very glamorous. It's also worth noting that the rorschach test painting in Lilian's apartment was an improvisation from the artist that I really liked.
