Update: 10.24.24, 'Not Yet Rated' assignment date confirmed

If a series has not been self-assigned a Content Rating, the series will automatically be assigned 'Not Yet Rated' on October 28th, 2024 PDT.

Update: 10.2.24 PDT, ‘Not Yet Rated’ Delayed

The deadline for the automatic assignment for ‘Not Yet Rated’ rating has been delayed. We've detected an important issue that needs to be addressed, and we are doing our best to solve it as soon as possible. 

This issue is not related to the series' rating process, so please complete your rating from the creator dashboard as soon as possible.

The issue should be resolved mid October. We will keep you posted on the exact date once it is confirmed.

Update: 8.23.24 PDT, Content Age Rating questionnaire bug fixed.

On August 22, 2024, we discovered an issue with the rating questionnaire related to the ‘Nudity’ and/or ‘Sensitive Themes and Topics’ categories, causing the final rating to be incorrect for some series. As of August 23, 2024, the bug has been resolved.

If you filled out the questionnaire before the date of this notice, and believe you were affected by this bug see below for instructions on how to retake the questionnaire entirely:

1.You must select your answers once again even if your answers remain the same.

2.You will see the corrected Content Rating when all the 6 categories are answered.

3.Click the check box to confirm your assigned Content Rating.

4.Click the 'Save series' button

Hey CANVAS Creators!

In Fall 2023, we implemented a Content Rating system for WEBTOON ORIGINALS series. This product update helped make WEBTOON ORIGINALS safer for our community by providing an easy way for readers to explore and understand which series are appropriate for their age group or content preferences, while complying with applicable regulatory requirements. 

To continue our goal of providing a safe reading experience for all users, we will be implementing Content Age Rating for CANVAS series on the English platform in the coming weeks. Creators will be able to start assigning their Content Age Rating as of August 20th, 3:00 a.m. - 6:00 a.m. EDT (GMT -4). Once Content Ratings have been processed and assigned, they will appear on your series shortly thereafter.

As a Creator here is what to expect:

Once Content Age Rating is live, you will be prompted to fill out a questionnaire about your series before you publish your next episode or create a new series.

In this questionnaire you will be required to answer 5 questions with a rating scale of 0 to 3.

Violent and graphic content

0 – No violence, blood or gore

1 – Mild or fantasy blood in a few episodes

2 – Violent themes with moderate blood or gore

3 – Detailed violence, blood or gore

 

Nudity

0 - No nudity (partial and full)

1 - Some characters in minimal clothing (e.g., bathing suit, lingerie), non-sexual themes

2 - Comedic nudity with strategic censoring

3 - Fan-service panels (e.g., minimal clothing in sexual posing). Sexually suggestive themes

 

Sexual content

0 - No sexual content or themes

1 - Mild sexual themes

2 - Sexual content or innuendos in a few episodes

3 - Sexual content and sexually suggestive themes throughout series

 

Profanity

0 - No profanity

1 - Fully censored profanity (e.g., #$%^) in a few episodes

2 - Uncensored or partially censored profanity in a few episodes

3 - Uncensored profanity throughout series

 

Alcohol, drugs, and/or tobacco

0 - No alcohol, drugs, and/or tobacco

1 - A few mentions of alcohol, drugs, and/or drugs

2 - Implied or mild consumption of alcohol, drugs, and/or tobacco

3 - Depiction of moderate to excessive consumption of alcohol, drugs, and/or tobacco

Sensitive themes and topics

0 - No sensitive themes or topics

1 - A few mentions of themes or topics such as self-harm, bullying or abuse

2 - Sensitive themes or topics such as self-harm, bullying, or abuse are mildly explored in some story arcs

3 - Sensitive themes such as self-harm, bullying, or abuse explored and are consistently present throughout the series

Once you have completed the questionnaire, your series will be assigned a rating based on your responses. When the content rating is assigned, click approve to finalize the result. If you need to revise your response, you will have the ability to submit the questionnaire again or contact creatorsupport@webtoon.com. 

You will have 40 days once the product is released to assign your series a rating. If you miss the deadline, a ‘Not Yet Rated’ rating will automatically be assigned to your series. Series that are assigned ‘Not Yet Rated’ will still be visible on the platform, but only accessible to readers aged 18 years or older.

Please see below the different ratings that can/will be assigned to your series based on the questionnaire. Please note the CANVAS Content Age Rating system matches the current rating system in place for ORIGINALS titles. 

 All Ages: Appropriate for readers of all ages. Series may contain mild depictions of cartoon blood.

Teen: Appropriate for readers aged 13 or older. Series may contain mild fantasy violence, blood, or gore. May contain minor themes related to mental health topics, but no graphic depictions. Series may contain mild profanity.

Young Adult: Appropriate for readers aged 16 or older. Series may contain moderate violence, profanity, sexual themes, mild nudity, and consumption of alcohol or drugs. May contain themes of self-harm, bullying, and abuse.

Mature: Appropriate for readers aged 18 or older. Series contains graphic imagery, violence, profanity, nudity, or sexual themes. 

If your series has been assigned ‘Mature’ and you would like to appeal the designation, you may reach out to Creatorsupport@webtoon.com. If interested, Creator Support can work with you to update your series to meet the criteria of a different Content Age rating, so it can be visible and appropriate for your intended readers.

With the update of Content Age Rating all WEBTOON™ Community Policy and Uploading Guidelines will remain the same. Our Content Age Rating definitions are intended to adhere to industry standards. Please ensure that your series continue to follow guidelines outlined in the Community Policy page. This new system will replace the Mature Content Warning checkbox feature. 

We appreciate that our Creators are dedicated to community safety. With this change, Creators can feel more confident that audiences will be presented with rated content that should be suitable for their age group.  We hope this update helps you connect more directly with your intended audience, and provides the ability to market your series in the most effective way possible.
