Artist epiphany #1: Don’t treat your art like a test.
We often struggle to pick up the pencil and draw what we love to draw. So that makes me wonder, are we treating our art like tests?
Tests are meant to, well, test you. There’s stakes involved. You’ll have to pass, or else you fail.
And that’s scary.
Art shouldn’t be scary. Instead, maybe we should make our art in practice. (Literally!) Practice is so much more forgiving. It gives us room to improve, and permission to make mistakes. Whenever we make something and it isn’t 100% flawless, we can brush it off and say “It’s ok, it is all in practice.”
I think we train ourselves to take art tests with every piece, especially for us who dare to post it on the internet. Wouldn’t it be nice if we can practice all the time? And once our creation is released into the 0s and 1s, no matter the outcome, we can let it go and just say “it’s ok, it is all in practice.”
They say Practice makes perfect.
Well I say practice makes play.
