If you’re not familiar with the crabs in a bucket phenomenon: A fisherman can leave a bucket full of crabs without a lid. If they left each other alone they’d be able to climb out but instead, when the other crabs notice that one crab is trying to escape, they immediately start to pull it back into the bucket. This makes sure that none of them make it out.
