Between the lines: Carter hoped he could hang out with Scott longer, so even if he's making a brave face in Scott's field of view, he's leaving feeling very distressed, rejected, and empty. He's going to the common room to be among people and not be alone in the turmoil. Because he knows he would spiral downwards quickly. His anger bursts out impulsively, but his sadness is very enclosed.
