Yes, I am aware that "being bitten" might be considered a Hollywood invention. There is, however, some evidence for it in historical accounts such as Hans the Werewolf in 1651. Since a 'canon' for werewolves doesn't exist, I take that to be license to use the lore which does exist as I may. I think "bitten" is now too commonly known as a cause of werewolfery not to include it.
