"Edward Hicks, a Quaker minister in the mid-1800's, was a mostly self-taught artist best known for his Peacable Kingdom paintings, which featured happy, docile, wild animals all sitting together with mankind, representing his belief that humans can coexist in harmony. He painted this same theme sixty-two times. As he grew more disillusioned with humanity over the years, his once-hopeful paintings changed. The more he was disappointed by mankind's violence, the sadder the animals in his paintings grew. By the end of the Peacable Kingdom series, the animals appeared tired, suffering and fighting with each other."
