"Today is a gift" is a cliched platitude that I think has long since overstayed its welcome, especially after Kung Fu Panda brought it back into vogue in 2008. It's a take on recommendations to "move on" - which I wouldn't mind if people weren't always so keen to remind you of your past mistakes or future doom and gloom. Making past and future so miserable doesn't tickle my fancy for the present.
