"Throwing out the baby with the bathwater" is an idiom that's been around since 16th century Germany. It means not to throw out the good with the bad - but what the "good" exactly is can still be up for debate. What you think is "good" can be considered as "the cost of business", "collateral damage" or "suffering builds character". Taking the baby out of the water is somehow not an option.
