Character building and lifelong learning originate from the same principle - learning something from a negative experience. The problem comes when learning from bad experiences gives you the information you need to avoid or mitigate them, and character building tells you to ignore all that and dive straight in anyway. It's a blank check for other people to make your life miserable.
