"The pen is mightier than the sword" is a phrase from 1839. It suggests that the written word is more effective than violence for communication. Others have taken "the pen" to refer to administrative power or news media. But realistically, unless you're already in a position of power, what you wield to get your point across matters very little. Someone else will have a bigger pen or sword.
