"Sticks and stones" isn't a very relevant mantra in today's society if you think about it. Reputation is a valued resource, just as any other tangible object - it's why people sue for slander and defamation. Saying that words don't cause any lingering effects or damage is done so only to discourage the recipient from taking action, or knowing that they're incapable of doing so due to circumstance.
