Comparing what you have with what else lies out there, beyond your control, has always been presented as unhealthy. The problem is that the same voices who tell you to be grateful for what you have can just as easily turn on you for being average, mediocre or uncompetitive. You'd be surprised how quickly people can turn on you when someone else is making them look inadequate or dumb.
