Not every instance of pain is a learning or even a worthwhile experience, but the idea that character building must be good is something that's ingrained in our modernist minds. It fetishes failure and suffering as something that looks good on a resume. In reality, all that does is encourage an arms race for how much idiocy you're willing (or dumb) enough to endure.
