I think people would be a lot more receptive to other perspectives - if the advice wasn't so often given as a roundabout way of telling someone "Your attitude is bad and you should feel bad", by figures of authority that are typically terrified of risk and change and sticklers for tradition, and frame every accident or misfortune as a character-building experience while demanding the same results.
