Ships are one of the motifs that get romanticised a lot. The discovery of exploration, the mystery of voyages, the tantalising prospect of accomplishment, you get the idea. The perils of ocean logistics, crew management, storms and waves are rarely ever brought up. If you see a ship these days it's either a set piece by someone who's "made it" or someone who actually fishes for a living.
