The beauty about the "spirit of the law" is that it's entirely up to the interpretation of whoever reads it - whether it's lawyers arguing over how much jail time you need to serve or adults in your life who need to nail you over something, even if it's just an attitude problem. The fact that you did as you were told is immaterial. It's the "value add" of following the rules.
