I've come to realise that control isn't so much an "illusion" as it is an "expectation" - it's something people want you to have so long as it fits their expectations, narrative or purpose. As soon as that usefulness runs out, or the scale of responsibility becomes too much to bear, the limits and boundaries of what you actually control promptly vanish - not that it removes your obligations.
