"Expect the unexpected" is an odd little platitude if you think about it. It's the playground taunt of "I know something you don't knoooow!" disguised as heartfelt advice. But because it doesn't actually specify anything, it doesn't serve any purpose outside of sending the at-risk tumbling down the cliff of escalating paranoia.
