A big problem with school admissions based on talent and extracurricular activities is that parents use it as an excuse to cram as much as possible into their kid, out of fear that they'll lose out to other parents. The result is that children aren't so much children as they are Swiss army circus robots, meant to be a loud flashy distraction without any of the substance underneath.
