At some point, adults just aren't interested in dealing with a subordinate or kid who feels their inherent value. Someone who is confident and self-assured isn't going to be hungry or motivated to improve or learn, they think. So not only do we constantly put challenges in front of these kids, we make them feel completely inferior for not successfully chasing moving goalposts.
