Any time someone makes a request for you to have a different perspective or empathy, it's always worth asking what that perspective or empathy involves. All too often, the ideal definition of what it involves is for you to give up your perspective an empathy just so someone else can treat you like a doormat, AND ask you to give thanks for the privilege.
