The problem with the modern era is that "competition" and "opportunity" have both increased sharply in amount. In a bid to grab what's left of the latter, organizations and authorities constantly push the former, even though the dream of progression as our parents understood it is often a pipe dream that doesn't get realised - and they're still doing it in the middle of a mass resignation wave.
