The idea of delaying gratification and getting unpleasant duties out of the way sounds nice. It paints an idealistic image of having "earned" something desirable after clearing out obligatory responsibilities. But life rarely works like that. What most people would rather you spend your time on nobody else wants to work on and stay there, usually claiming that it's what "competitive workers" do.
