I've noticed that people tend to romanticise the "journey", even when the journey ends up being terrible - purely on the basis that you'll recall these memories fondly because suffering is a bonding experience, whereas success becomes meaningless in the long run. I think these idealists tend to forget that there's very little value in not getting anywhere, and very little patience for doing so.
