"Your grades don't define you" is an argument that has the same kind of energy as "Guns don't kill people, people kill people". It's a semantically correct statement, but is often offered in dubious faith, brings so little relief to the recipient it's usually insignificant, and is more or less not worth the oxygen and spit to get it out of your mouth.
